BELIEVING, REPENTING, COMING

BELIEVING, REPENTING, COMING

Gary Shepard

How subtle and quick men are to reduce faith, repentance and coming to Christ to one time acts. As soon as these things become a one time act of men, they become dead works by men and therefore no one is saved through them. Salvation is by grace and not of works lest any man should boast. All of these are living graces inseparably joined to the living Christ and therefore constantly alive in action. There is in scripture the sense of past, present and future tense in each one. I have believed, I am believing and I shall believe. I have repented, I am repenting and I shall repent. I have come to Christ, I am coming to Christ and I shall come to Christ. Those who are spiritually alive and in union with Christ never rest for one moment on yesterday's faith, repentance or coming to Christ. These things are like the manna that was to be gathered daily and all that was left over could not be preserved but rotted and smelled. All these things are perpetual gifts of God. Faith, "and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God." Repentance, "if God peradventure will give them repentance." Coming to Christ, "no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father." (Eph. 2:8, II Tim. 2:25, John 6:65) These gifts are attitudes, constant quickenings and states of being out of which many acts flow and continue to flow. Faith, "be not faithless, but believing." Repentance, "one sinner that repenteth," "repentance." Coming to Christ, "to Whom coming." (Jn. 20:27; Lk. 15:10; I Pet. 2:4) No one believes on Christ, repents or comes to Christ before they hear the gospel of Christ. But those who do hear it and are born again by the Spirit of God never stop believing, repenting and coming. If you are not believing, repenting and coming right now, then you never have at all! Most in our day have not believed because they have never heard of the true Christ; they are not repenting because they cling to their filthy rags of self-righteousness and a false god; and they are not coming to Christ because they are still going from Him in their own way and the way prescribed by false religion. We testify with Paul and call upon men to come to God in Christ through repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ and to keep doing it! Whatever God does, He does forever! He who has begun a good work in us will perfect it unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
