Perhaps the most appropriate method of naming church would be according to its location --.Thirteenth Street Baptist, Laird Street Baptist, etc. However, if: I was going to name a church in this age of religious frivolity and foolishness, I think I might name it the Burning Bush Baptist Church, and continually let men know the reason for such a name. That is, this is a holy place (Exodus 3:5).
The burning bush of Exodus three says to one and all, "Whoa there! take off those humanistic, frivolous, fun-loving, entertainment-seeking, religious shoes. This is holy ground!" This is where God meets with his saints and "God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence by all them that are about him" (Psalm 89:7). This is the place where believers meet together to worship in the presence of the Holy Almighty and his holy angels. "This is holy ground!" "Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few" (Ecclesiastes 5:1,2).
Yes, "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord" (Psalm 122:1). Yes, the saints meet together to worship their God with joy and thanksgiving, but their joy does not detract from the solemnity of the occasion. "This is holy ground!" Worshipping God is no game! Those who think otherwise should have a talk with Ananias and his wife Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11).
"Holy Father, give us here today believing, reverential, worshipping hearts for the glory of Thy Son and the good of our souls. Amen."
