REST

REST

Hebrews 4:10

Tommy Robbins

"For He that is entered into His rest, He also hath ceased from His own works, as God did from His"–Hebrews 4:10.

This verse speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ having finished the great work of Justification and Redemption for the elect of God. The work of salvation was completed and the "chosen in Christ" were accepted and secured in Him when He "sat down on the Right Hand of God" (Heb. 10:12). Our Lord wrought out an "Everlasting Righteouness" for His people in the flesh, here on this earth, and when He had finished, and not until He had finished, He then " ceased from His Own works" and "entered into HIS REST." The Lord Jesus Christ, therefore having completed His work and "having obtained external Redemption for us " (Heb. 9:12), "entered once into the Holy Place ... by His Own blood." The faith of the true child of God rests in the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our works do not in any measure enter into our acceptance with God or our security in Christ. Those who trust in their own works or goodness for hope of eternal life are not saved. This is not a "judgment call" on my part, this is the teaching of the Bible. Those who, by faith which God gives, rest in Christ and trust in Christ alone, for all their salvation, are completely and forever saved. This verse does not suggest that the children of God are complacent and lazy, presuming on the grace of God. As a matter of fact it condemns such. The following verse says, " Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." Although true faith looks to and rests in Christ, the believer never rests as long as he lives. His life is a work of faith and labour of love. We stand by faith, we walk by faith, we run by faith, we fight by faith, we live by faith, Nowhere in the Bible do we find that we sit or take a vacation from the things of God by faith. The child of God works because he is resting. The Lord Jesus Christ is resting because He finished the work that His Father gave Him to do. The Lord Jesus Christ worked to put away His people's sin, the saints work because He put away their sin. He died unto sin because our sin was upon Him, we live unto God because His Righteousness is upon us.
