The Lord's people desire His blessing above all else. All spiritual blessing is in the Lord Jesus Christ, and to those who believe on Him, by God's grace, He is precious. Ephesians 1:3; I Peter2:7.
The Lord has promised to meet with His people in public worship. "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I AM in the midst of them." Matthew 18:20.This is not a reference to every place of worship, but those assemblies where Christ is preached in truth and sovereign grace. Jehovah God, the Great I AM honors the assembling of His saints with His very presence! Is it any wonder that believers make public worship a priority? Personal times of prayer and communion with our Father are useful and necessary, yet, He has promised His particular blessing on those who gather in Christ's name.
Irregularity and unfaithfulness in our attendance of public worship reveals a cold heart (Revelation 2:4; 3:20), shows disregard for the command of God's holy word, and robs one of the blessing and help derived from meeting with the Lord's people and fellowshipping with Him.
"As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." Proverbs 27:17. "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more as ye see the day approaching." Hebrews 10: 24,25
Will not a true knowledge of Christ and His sovereign grace move us to worship Him publicly? Can our hearts be set aflame by the Spirit of God and we not give Him our utmost? When we profess to the outside world our love for God as sovereign King, will we then deny Him by indifference or busyness in other things we consider more important than worship? Will we seek God to save His elect, and then deny ourselves the fellowship with His elect?
