The Omnipotent God

The Omnipotent God

Doug Weaver

Because the Lord our God is omnipotent, we can confidently trust Him in all things and with all things. Omnipotence simply means "all powerful". This always has the meaning of uniqueness or exclusiveness. In other words, there is no power comparable to the one who is omnipotent. Omnipotence is an essential attribute of God and an attribute that belongs to God alone. It is the nature of God to be almighty. Anything less than an almighty, omnipotent God is no God at all. If God were not omnipotent, He could not be trusted.

Think about these implications. Though He has willed, determined, decreed and predestinated all that He would have to be done, His purpose would be futile if He did not possess omnipoent power to execute His will. Though He makes many promises of faithfulness, goodness and mercy, they would all be meaningless, if He lacked the ability to carry them out to perfection. God's love and grace would be nothing more than helpless, frustrated emotions if He lacked the ability to sovereignly bestow His love and grace upon His people. Though He is righteous and just in rendering to every man the proper reward of His works, His righteousness and justice would be vain, if God lacked the power to execute them. Once again, omnipoence is an essential attribute of God.

If we, in anyway, limit God's sovereignty and omnipotence, we would be denying His essential Divinity and destroying every foundation for true faith in Him. If God be God, He must be omnipotent. Throughout the scriptures God's sovereign omnipotence is set before us as a matter of greatest praise and adoration. (I Chron 29:1O,1l; Jer 32:17,18; Dan 4:35)
