"And the Word was made flesh..."
John 1:14

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth."–John 1:14

The work of the Lord Jesus Christ in redemption has no value if He is not "God manifest in the flesh." This has been the division among men all down through the ages. The prophets spoke of this, but even those of their day would not believe that God would be manifested in the flesh and come and die to redeem sinners. When they saw Him as a man, they would not believe He was God; that God was made flesh and dwelt among men. They would not believe that He humbled Himself to the death of the Cross. Men cannot comprehend how the Son of man could die at the hands of men for sin.

Christ Jesus made Himself of no reputation and gave Himself for sinners. He did not take upon Himself the form of angels, but became man. Then He humbled Himself even more than becoming man, by becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross, and then was buried in a borrowed grave. But God raised Him up. Now all this has no value if He is not God. "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." "God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh.

This truth that God was made flesh is what shuts the mouths of those who deny God. Almost everything will be admitted to but that "God was in Christ reconciling fthe world unto Himself." It is hard for us to believe that God would humble Himself to the point of saving such a wretch like me. A believer cannot understand why God would come and save, but an unbeliever can. The unbeliever thinks he deserves to be saved by God, so God will go to any trouble to save him.

There is no doubt that the Lord was made flesh and dwelt among us. There is no doubt that God humbled Himself to the form of man and the death of the cross. Sin has made us horrible in the sight of God, and makes us fit for Hell alone, not for God's mercies. There is a justice which must be satisfied. The least sin of which we are guilty deserves etemal death in Hell. "The wages of sin is death." There is nothing in us which can satisfy this justice. God's law condemns us, our consciences condemn us, and justice must and will be satisfied.

My soul stands in need of a Mediator to stand between me and God. lf in me there is only wickedness and unworthiness, and in God there is only strict justice, holiness, and righteousness, and I know that I must stand before the infinite glory of God Himself, there is only despair for me, I have no hope. I can only cry, "0 wretched man that I am." It would be better had I come into this world as a cock-roach and not as a human being, for when that cock-roach dies, that is the end of it, but the end of the unbelieving sinner is etemal torment in Hell.

"But God, who is rich in mercy, for the great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sin," sent Christ Jesus "Into the world to save sinners"... "to redeem us from the curse of the law."
