MORALITY OR HOLINESS?

MORALITY OR HOLINESS?

Henry Mahan

Many religionists make the mistake of confusing morality and holiness. Moral changes are commendable and I would encourage them; but just as silver is not gold, so morality is not holiness! Morality enables us to be good husbands, fathers, workmen, neighbors and examples; but without holiness no man shall see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14). Morality can be produced by determination. Holiness can only be produced by regeneration. Morality is a change of habit. Holiness is a change of heart. Morality will produce acts of love. Holiness will produce thoughts and acts of love. Morality is motivated by faith in oneself and concern for personal reputation. Holiness is motivated by faith in the Lord Jesus. Morality usually leads to pride and condemnation of those less righteous. Holiness leads to true humility and an understanding spirit toward those who fall. So, my brother, your morality is not holiness; and my message to you, who may have the greatest regard and opinion of your good character, is "You must be born again. " (John3:3,5).
