The title of this article sets forth the most important question any man or woman will ever face. Every believer must be able to give a biblical answer to anyone who may ask him (I Peter 3:15), and every unbeliever most certainly needs to know the answer. Dear reader, what is your answer? What is eternal life? When may a sinner, with the Word of God as his support, say. "I am saved. I have God's salvation. I have eternal life?" The Lord Jesus Christ himself gives us the answer in words plain and clear. "This is eternal life, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (Jo 17:3). Now the only way a sinner can savingly know God is in His Son, the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ (Jo 8:19;14:7-9). He who knows the Son knows the Father. Therefore, those who truly know the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ, have eternal life. Those who know Him shall never perish, never die; but have eternal life. No wonder the apostle Paul speaks of the "excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:8). For the knowledge of Christ surpasses all else. It is eternal life!
Dear reader, do you really and truly know the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you know the Jesus of the Bible? John Newton, author of that beloved old hymn, "Amazing Grace," once said and rightly so, "True religion arises from a true knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the scriptures." The God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ must be known, loved and worshiped as He is set forth in the Word of God. Knowing Him is life, salvation and glory. Not to know Him is misery, death and hell. Therefore, we must not rely upon imagination, religious tradition, or any preacher! We must, as individuals, "search the scriptures" (Acts 17:11).
What does the Bible say about the Lord Jesus Christ? Did you ever give the subject any serious thought? Or have you always taken for granted that you already knew him? Contrary to current majority opinion, He is, in the Bible, declared to be the sovereign, powerful, effectual Redeemer and Saviour, robed in majesty and glory (I Tim. 6:15,16: Rev. 1:9-18). Jesus Christ is the Creator, Sustainer and ruler of all things, animate and inanimate (John 1:1-3; Col. 1:15-19: Hebrews 1:1-3; I Cor. 15:24, 25; Rev. 4:11). He has all power in heaven and in earth. and over every man in the universe (Psalms 2 & 110; Acts 2:32-36; Heb. 1:4-13; 10:12, 13; Matt. 28:18; John 17:2). The Jesus of the Bible has and exercises the power to give eternal life to whomsoever He wills (Psalms 110:1-3; John 5:21,25; 6:38.39:10:1- 30; Matt 1:21). In His own time He shall destroy every man and woman who do not willingly and graciously bow down, love, worship and serve Him as He is (Psalm 2:9-12; John 5:21-29; Phill. 2:8-11; Rev. 6:12-17). Therefore, dear reader. we are warned to "Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little"(Psalm 2:12). He is infinitely gracious to all who sincerely come to Him in spiritual need (Matt. 11:25-30; Luke 1:53; 18: 9-14; Psalm 107; and see Matt 8:14; 15:21-28). Do you know this Jesus? Those who know Him love and worship, honor and serve Him–without fail! (John 10:1-30)
