On a recent T.V. program I saw a number of people waiting for a new heart. They would die soon if a donor were not found. Without exception their desire to live had to do with their reluctance to leave family. Finally, one by one they received a transplant, and their families were very happy.
One of the men who received a new heart was holding his two-year-old son and made the remark, "This is forever now." Wait a minute! Forever is a long time, and this man was susceptible to 10,000 diseases that could kill him quickly. Yet in his mind, that new heart was a heal-all. Oh, no! He must die!
Now I do not begrudge these people a few more years on this earth, though I do not share in their enthusiasm. There is a new heart that I am vitally interested in. "A new heart also will I give you" (Ez.36:26). THIS IS A HEART WORTH HAVING, AND IT IS FOREVER. It does not pump blood, but it is obtained through blood, the shedding of blood. "And having made peace through the blood of His cross" (Col. 1 :20).
When our Lord Jesus Christ hung on that cross and His precious blood poured from His body, He made peace between the holy God and all who receive Him and His substitutionary work on their behalf. Only this new spiritual heart will do this. I have a fleshly heart that will fail, but what matters that? The Son of God dwells in my real heart by faith. "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith" (Eph. 3:17).
Do I want on the donor list for a new heart? No, thanks! I already have one that shall never cease. Thank God Almighty for the gift of knowing what is real.
Yes, "they die," but not I.
