"For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth..."

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure (experience) chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?–Hebrews 12:7

When we are chastened by God, either through His Word or through difficult providence, it is not a sign of His rejecting us, but His receiving us. It's goal is not to make us miserable, but to correct us. God's design for His people is never their downfall, but their uprising. Surely Satan will take an occasion in the believer's chastening to question his sonship: "Aha, your faith is vain, your trust misplaced. Does your misery and affliction not prove that God is not for you?" Satan used these very tactics with THE Son of God as He hung on the tree: "He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, IF he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God." If God's only Son was attacked in this fashion as He suffered for sins not His own, do not be surprised if Satan uses the same tactic on you. So, in the time of trouble, or when some Scripture or sermon brings you low, God is not destroying you, He is building you up; He is not casting you out, He is hemming you in. Give thanks that the Lord does not leave you to yourself. Lift up your head with joy that God loves you enough to chasten you.
