There was no shortage of evidence which proved the deity of Mary's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He presented Himself to them according to the whole tenor of Old Testament Scripture, that which they gloried in! (John 5:39-46). The apostle Peter told them that Jesus was "a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know" (Acts 2:22). However, as the apostle John tells us, "Though He had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on Him" (12:37). And, as the apostle Paul tells us in the Acts, "Because they knew Him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they fulfilled them in condemning Him" (13:27). What horrible stubbornness, blindness and religious pride!
They, like us (and all men and women by nature), had fallen, sinful, depraved natures and wills. Having heard what He said and witnessed what He did, His words to them and condemnation of them is, "You will not come to me that you might have life." They would go against evidence and conscience, but not against their positions and traditions (Matthew 15:1-20). They were willing to follow Him around the countryside, wonder at His miracles, and perhaps even eat of the loaves and fishes, but they were not willing to acknowledge their sinfulness, their lostness and helplessness, and submit to Him who is life (Romans 10:1-4).
Men and women today are still the, same. They (many of them) read what the Bible says about God's holiness, justice and sovereignty, yet will not give up their free will, human merit and human works religion. How horrible the bondage of a false religion! Are there some who are reading this little article who, to this hour, will not come to the sovereign Saviour? Oh, poor soul! what will your end be? I urge you, beg of God a new heart and attitude. HE IS GRACIOUS!
