Mr. Spurgeon used to say that there were two steps to heaven: the first is out of self and the second is into Christ. That first step toward heaven is ceasing to trust or rely upon anything of self, and the second step is to trust fully, completely and entirely in the Lord Jesus Christ for ALL of salvation. One who is looking to his repentance, decision, feelings, or even his faith, has not taken that first step toward heaven.
Coming to Christ is peace and rest for the guilty soul, and one can never have any true and lasting peace and rest until he comes to rest in Christ ALONE. I mean this: in my soul I see and experience, not only repentance but rebellion, not only faith but unbelief, not only obedience but disobedience; and thus my feelings fluctuate, vacillate and oscillate, and would leave my hope like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed, if I looked to myself as any part of my hope. However, notwithstanding all of the manifestations of sin in this body of death, when I lift up my eyes to Christ as He is revealed in the Scriptures, I find hope and an anchor for my soul which is sure and steadfast. You see, by the Spirit and grace of God I have the utmost confidence, an unshakable confidence IN HIM; in His righteousress, in His atonement for sin, and His precious promises and unchanging love for all helpless sinners who submit to Him as Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:1-4; 1 Corinthians 12:3).
The apostle Paul says to believers, But of him (God) are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That according as it is written, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:30,31). Therefore believing sinners are complete IN HIM (Colossians 2:10), and accepted IN HIM (Eph. 1:6), and IN HIM find rest and peace for their guilty, weary, sin-laden souls (Matthew 11:28-30).
