Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, ‘This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.’John 6:14
This confession sounds pretty close to the truth doesn’t it? It even sounds as if the one’s making it were truly believers in Christ. However, the following verse says, "When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone."
How close can one be to the truth and still miss it? We all know the adage, "A miss is as bad as a mile!" These men perceived certain truth about the Lord Jesus Christ, but missed THE TRUTH!.
How fearful the state of any who have the opportunity to know the truth, but miss it because their interest is not in the TRUTH. They seek their own selfish gain. Here was a crowd of people whose interest was not salvation, but political deliverance. They sought a kingdom of their own imagining, but not the kingdom of God! They stood face to face with the King of Glory Himself, yet, did not perceive Him for who He is! This should raise the question in our own hearts. What is the evidence that I know the Lord Jesus Christ in truth?
The Lord Jesus Christ withdrew Himself from these false followers. He did not come to win a popularity contest. He came to save sinners, to redeem a people for His glory, and to call out of every nation, a people made holy by His work of obedience in their place, Titus 2:14. We do not make the Lord Jesus King. God the Father already made Him the King by eternal decree, Psalm 2:6,7. You simply bow to Him as He is indeed, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. There is no other!
Let us be careful not to be as the religious zealots in our Lord’s day, who professed him with their lips only, but had no interest in Him as God’s sacrifice and sin bearer for His people. Unless we approach Him as guilty, lost and condemned, we do not know Him as Savior. Unless we bow to Him as the Lord our Righteousness, we have no righteousness. Unless we rest from our own works, and trust His work alone, we have missed Him. Philippians 3:3
