The story of Abraham’s servant seeking a bride for Isaac is a beautiful illustration of how God brings sinners to His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Abraham is a representation of God the Father who has purposed to have a bride for His Son. Isaac typifies the only beloved Son of God, whom the Father has purposed to honor with a bride. The servant typifies either the blessed Holy Spirit, sent forth to bring the bride to the Master, or the servant typifies the faithful Gospel minister sent forth to proclaim the good news of the Master and bring the elect bride to Him. The bride, Rebecca, typifies every Spirit born sinner, who believes the message of the Gospel and comes to the Master.
In reflecting upon the character of the servant in Genesis 24, consider these qualities.
The faithful servant is to look for one thing- THE BRIDE. He doesn’t know who she is ahead of time, but, as he is faithful in seeking her and no other, God providentially directs his steps to that one for whom he was sent. As the servant spoke with Rebecca at the well, it became more and more apparent that she was the one. However, the servant did not immediately presume upon her. He continued to converse about the son of his Master, until when asked the question, Rebecca willingly went to Isaac, leaving family, friends, and comforts of home behind. This she did without ever having seen Isaac first, but believing the word of the servant. That is a true work of God. It illustrates how God calls out the elect in Christ, through the Word of the Gospel, bringing His chosen ones to His Son. "Whom having not seen, ye love." 1 Peter 1:8
