TWO PRECIOUS GIFTS

TWO PRECIOUS GIFTS

In Phil. 1:24, Paul says to the believers in Phillipi, "For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, (because of Christ or for Christ's sake,) not only to believe on Him, but to suffer for His sake." Here we have two things that are given to believers. 1) Faith. "It is given to you to believe." Our faith is not the product of our free-will, but the gift of His grace. "By grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God." Eph. 2:8,9. 2) Suffering. "To suffer for His sake." We usually think of suffering as an evil to be avoided. But the Bible tells us "suffering for His sake" is a gift from God! It may be the suffering that comes as a result of open persecution, not so open persecution, loss of friends, family, or finances as a result of following Him. It could be any of a number of other things. But it is a gift of His grace, just as much as faith is. One martyr put it like this while they tied him to a stake. "To die for Christ, tis an honor I do not deserve."
