Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5
In general, we count children to be a blessing. But even the writer of this Psalm, Solomon, had sons who later became a curse to His household. But there is one, a greater-than-Solomon, to whom these words apply with perfection, even our Lord Jesus Christ. To our Savior, a heritage of many sons has been given, as it is written, "In bringing many sons to glory," and "Here I am, and the children God hast given me." (Hebrews 2:10,13) The Lord is supremely worthy of them, so they are called a reward from the LORD. They were given to Him in the covenant of grace and He fully proved Himself worthy of them by His work which He did in their behalf. They are like arrows for Him as He uses them to spread the word of the gospel of His glory: and his quiver is full of them! The Lord Jesus has no want of sons to serve His cause in this world. If we perceive that there are not many preaching the gospel of His glory in our day, it is because not many are presently needed; the Lord always has sufficient arrows to subdue His enemies, accomplish His purpose and win the battle of the day. And how bold are these arrows! When "shot" by the Lord they contend in the public arena and are not ashamed. See how the apostles and other gospel preachers of that day and every day since have boldly declared the message of Christ! None could stop them: Emperors and their empires fell at their bold preaching! Rebellious sinners were won to Christ. Generation after generation the full quiver of the Lord has assaulted this world with marvelous success to the glory of Him who shoots these arrows. The churches of the world are forever trying to fill their quivers; the Lord Jesus already has a full quiver. And His sons shall never be ashamed, never find their cause abandoned or defeated. In the end, the Lord Jesus and His many sons shall be an everlasting testimony to the greatness of God, who gave His Son for us and gave us as sons to his Son!
