THE ICON OF THE AGES

THE ICON OF THE AGES

Maurice Montgomery

The icon, the idol, the imaginary god of the ages, that which is termed by the apostle Paul "the mystery of iniquity" which "opposeth and exalteth itself above" the Being, will, way, and worship of God (II Thess. 2:3-12).. .That which demands for itself that glory, honor, and praise due unto God alone... That which is the very origin of Lucifer, the origin of sin in the human race, and the very principle of all satanic and sinful thought and activity... That which is promoted and enforced by man's fleshly, sinful nature and all the deceptive powers of satan.. What is it?

The icon, the idol, the imaginary god of the ages, that Luciferian spirit of opposition to the true and living God and His gospel of sovereign and free grace.. That which is so odious, despicable, and hated of God, and so insidiously murderous to the souls of men and women. Yet, that which men boast in (in and Out of religion) more than any other single thing, though it leads them into spiritual suicide and perdition... What is it?

The icon, the idol, the imaginary god of the ages, that which, even in religion, men and women are not willing to give up (and will not give up) unless God is pleased to intervene... What is it? It is, quite simply, the creature will, the natural will of man, that supposedly independent and free will of man That is the popular icon, the beloved idol, and the most praised god of the ages, though completely imaginary and false.

"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Prov. 14:12; 16:25). "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way" (Isa. 53:6). "They are all gone out of the way" (Rom. 3:12).
